Secure EMV Chip Cards

The future of secure card payments has arrived. Your new EMV Chip card is more secure and more widely accepted than your existing card. EMV Chip cards contain an embedded chip that uses secure technology that makes it harder to copy your card information, better protecting you from fraud. Chip cards are already used in more than 130 countries around the world, including Canada, Mexico and most European countries, giving you greater card acceptance when traveling internationally.

What do I need to do when I receive my new card?

  • Call the number on the sticker on your card to activate your new card immediately.
  • Your existing card will expire in 30 days.
  • Select your new PIN number. You may re-enter your existing PIN or choose a new PIN.
  • Sign the back of your new card.
  • Cut up and discard your old card.
  • Update your new card information with all merchants and banks authorized to automatically charge your account within the next 30 days.

Why am I receiving a new card with a chip?

We are providing you with a new EMV Chip card to better protect you from fraud. Chip cards do everything magnetic stripe cards do, with an additional layer of security.  They contain an embedded chip that uses secure technology to make it harder to copy your account information. This new and improved security better protects your identity and reduces the cost of fraud.

What makes this card more secure?

The small, metallic square on your new card is an interactive dynamic computer chip that uses encryption to transmit your personal information.  Unlike magnetic stripe cards, chip cards create a unique code for each transaction that is monitored and cannot be reused. It is extremely difficult for someone to clone your card and use it at a later date.

How do I use my new chip card to make a purchase?

The information on an EMV Chip card is read a different way.  Instead of going to a register and swiping your card, you “dip it”. This means that you insert your card into the terminal slot instead of swiping it, leaving it in the terminal until the transaction is complete. The terminal will provide instructions and prompt you to remove your card at the end of the transaction.

Can I still use my new EMV Chip card at a retailer that doesn’t have an EMV terminal?

If the retailer doesn’t have an EMV Chip-enabled terminal, or you are making an online or phone purchase, you will complete the transaction just like you do today.  EMV Chip cards are equipped with both a magnetic stripe and an EMV Chip.

Will I still have to sign or enter a PIN for my card transaction?

Please continue to choose “credit” instead of “debit” for all purchases. When you choose “credit” you may be required to sign to complete the transaction.
If you choose “debit” you will be charged a fee of $1.50. You may also need to enter your pin in the terminal to complete the transaction.

Will my new card still work at an ATM?

Yes, it will. You can continue to use your new card at ATMs as you do today.  You will, however, need to use your new pin at an ATM.

Can I change my pin?

Yes, you can change your pin by calling 1-866-985-2273.

What if I have recurring payments set up on my old card?

When you receive your new card, update all merchants and banks authorized with your new card information, expiration date and security code immediately.
